Landon Middle Student Wins the 2011 Duval County Spelling Bee

Ashlie Malone, a sixth-grade student at Julia Landon Middle, won the 2011 Duval County Spelling Bee held last night at Mandarin Middle School. The contest lasted 35 rounds and the students spelled over 200 words. Ashlie won by spelling the word “kavya" correctly.

Supervisor of Elections Office Set to Register Duval Students

Duval County Supervisor of Elections office partners with local high schools, colleges and universities to register students in the 2011 Countywide Student Voter Registration Drive. This year's drive is a three day event scheduled for Tuesday, February 1st through Thursday, February 3rd.

The fifteen semifinalists for the 2011 Florida Blue Teacher of the Year have been named.  These teachers were selected from more than 158 school representatives based on the nomination packet they completed and classroom observation.

The Just Read, Florida! Office in the Department of Education (DOE), in partnership with other DOE offices and numerous other state organizations and agencies, is planning a statewide “Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!” event, scheduled for the week of January 24-28, 2011.

2011 VPK Kick-Off

Early Learning Coalition of Duval will have the 7th annual Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) Kick-Off on Saturday, Jan. 29, at three locations around Jacksonville- FSCJ (Advanced Tech Center @ the Downtown Campus), Fletcher High School and Ed White High School. Each location will enroll eligible 4-year-olds into Florida’s FREE VPK program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Parents and care-givers are invited to attend Duval County Public Schools’ Title I Parent University Winter 2011. Parent University offers a series of workshops designed to provide helpful information for parents so that they may better assist their child to be successful in school.

Two Local Schools Receive Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grants

Gardens With a PurposeLowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded 33 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education® grants in Florida. These schools received grants during the fall 2010 grants cycle, and they are some of the more than 480 schools or parent organizations that were awarded a grant for parent-initiated school improvement projects benefiting K-12 public education across the United States.
