The University of North Florida’s Us Group, along with UNF’s Brooks College of Health and the Mayo Clinic, will feature Dr. Mary O’Connor, world-renowned orthopedic surgeon and chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Florida, at its annual educational luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, at the UNF University Center. She will discuss “Lifelong Bone Health: Girls to Grannies.” Check-in and registration begins at 10:45 a.m.

February is American Heart Month and BlackFinn is raising heart health awareness with its Go Red Happy Hour benefiting the American Heart Association (AHA) on Friday, February 4, from 5 – 8 p.m.

The BlackFinn Go Red Happy Hour will feature a special heart-healthy menu with items such as Lime Glazed Salmon, Roasted Vegetable Pasta and Pomegranate Glazed Chicken as well as specialty PAMA-tinis, red win features and complimentary passed hors d’oeuvres. Suggested $5 donations will be collected at the Saloon door for the American Heart Association and a portion of the sales from BlackFinn’s special heart-healthy menu will also benefit the AHA. In addition, anyone who makes a donation to the AHA Friday night will be eligible to win various prizes, including BlackFinn gift cards and a Tiffany & Co. Paloma Picasso Loving Heart Pendant.

Learning Disabilities Conference Offers Information and Research from Experts in the Field

?The 48th International Conference of the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) will be held in Jacksonville, FL, February 23-26, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront hotel.  The LDA conference is the largest in the country focusing on all aspects of learning disabilities.  

New Young Professional Group: The Miracle Board

With a population of over 736,000 people, Jacksonville has many young individuals looking to get involved in their local community.  Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Northeast Florida/ Southeast Georgia is proud to have such an opportunity with its new young professional group, The Miracle Board.  The Miracle Board will comprise of young professionals, ages 21 through 35 years old, that will work towards furthering the success of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Jacksonville’s mission, engaging these members through networking and volunteer opportunities, as well as raising awareness and funds to support the pediatric programs at Shands Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

Memorial Health & St. Vincent’s Healthcare Come to an Agreement on West Jacksonville Hospital

Memorial Health and St. Vincent’s HealthCare have come to an agreement over the development of a Memorial Health proposed 85-bed acute care hospital on Jacksonville’s Westside.

Memorial Health was granted a Certificate of Need (CON) by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) late last year. St. Vincent’s HealthCare originally opposed construction of the new hospital but a series of negotiations over several months resulted in a solution agreeable to both parties.
