More information on police-involved shooting expected tomorrow

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man is dead after officers say he and a female tried to openly carry a gun into the Academy Sports + Outdoors store near the intersection of Atlantic and Kernan Boulevards Tuesday morning.

Store managers tried to stop the pair, but told officers the couple would not cooperate, according to JSO Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt.

After a verbal disagreement in the store, Senterfitt said a white pickup truck with a female driver left the scene.

When officers tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver refused to stop and Senterfitt said the male passenger pointed a gun out the window of the car.

That's when officers opened fire, killing the man, Senterfitt said. No officers were injured. The female driver was taken into custody.

Investigators believe the couple took the gun inside the store so that they could buy ammunition for it. Officers said the couple purchased ammunition while inside the store.

JSO will hold a press conference Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. give updated information on this incident.
