Vehicle slams into utility pole on Fort Caroline Road | News

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Traffic Homicide detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office are investigating a fatal crash on Fort Caroline Road.

The accident happened before 5 a.m. at the intersection with Spanish Bluff Road. JEA crews responded to the scene where a BMW slammed into a concrete utility pole.

Shannon Hartley, Public Information Officer for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, said 34-year-old Earnest Jones was driving East on Ft. Caroline Road near Spanish Bluff Drive.  Hartley said Jones lost control of his vehicle and then drove through a ditch and struck a concrete utility pole.

Emergency workers with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department pronounced Jones dead at the scene.

Ft. Caroline Road reopened around 10 a.m. Friday.
