Father to Face Charges in Daughter's Accidental Shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 2-year-old shot a 4-year-old in the foot, and the victim's father was taken to jail.

At about 6:15 Wednesday evening officers responded to a shooting at a home on Hare Avenue in the Woodland Acres area.

Officers learned that there were several children in the home, and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrest report indicates the children had been playing with a loaded .45 caliber handgun that had been in the bathroom.

In the process, a little girl accidentally shot her 4-year-old sister in the foot; the victim went to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Now the girl's father, 30-year-old Jermaine Shamonte Jackson, will face culpable negligence charges for leaving the gun in a place where the children could reach it.

The arrest report indicates that Jackson said he was trying to clean the pistol in the master bathroom, saying the slide was not functioning properly.

He told the officers he needed a tool, so he placed the gun under a cloth in a bag on the rear of the toilet, then left the bathroom to get the tool from a closet.

He said his daughter said she needed to go to the bathroom, so he told her to go to the hall bathroom, and he continued walking to his closet.

Then he heard the gunshot, he said.

He also said he knew there was a live round in the chamber when he left the gun.
