JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An early-morning wreck involving multiple vehicles that shut down the Mathews Bridge started with a driver going the wrong way.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Jacob Cody Faver, the 19-year-old driver of a Chevy truck, was traveling eastbound in the left westbound lane around 2 a.m. when he struck another vehicle, a Honda, that was traveling westbound.
FHP said the Honda tried to swerve out of the way, but the vehicles still collided and the impact forced the Honda to turn sideways across the right lane. A third vehicle, a Pontiac Grand Prix, was unable to stop in time, and crashed into the driver's side of the Honda.
A motorcycle that was in the bed of the Chevy truck flew out of the car during the crash and landed in an eastbound lane.
Traffic homicide was called to the scene, and we're told the drivers of the Chevy and the Honda were taken to Shands in serious condition.
After more than two and a half hours, the east and westbound lanes of the bridge were reopened.
