JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hundreds of people lined the streets in front of the Five Star Veterans Center on Thursday for the group's first free food pantry.

The nonprofit center estimated that thousands of pounds of meat, dairy, vegetables and canned goods were handed out to hungry people during the three-hour event.

The center worked with Feeding Northeast Florida group to provide groceries to veterans, active-duty military and Woodland Acres residents.

The Five Star Veterans group estimates the center gave away more than 16,000 meals last year.
