JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – Communities In Schools of Jacksonville CEO Jon Heymann is one of two individual winners in the United States to win the National Dropout Prevention Network (NDPN) Crystal Star Award of Excellence in Dropout Recovery, Intervention and Prevention. Heymann accepted the award at the 24th Annual National Dropout Prevention Network Conference luncheon on Oct. 16 in Orlando, Fla.

As a distinguished recipient of the award, Heymann has "demonstrated clear evidence of success in meeting the needs of at-risk students and furthering the mission of the National Dropout Prevention Network."

Heymann grew Communities In Schools of Jacksonville from a $1.5 million-per-year program to a $7 million-per-year program that currently helps more than 7,000 at-risk students in 40 local public schools. Communities In Schools of Jacksonville is the leading dropout prevention program in Northeast Florida, helping thousands of kids daily through mentoring, literacy tutoring, after-school enrichment and case management.

“It is a true honor to receive the Crystal Star Award,” said Heymann. “Dropout prevention is a challenging problem to tackle, but with collaborative efforts, I know we will continue to empower these students to achieve their scholastic goals and surpass their own expectations.”

The mission of the NDPN is to serve as a research center and resource network for practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to reshape school and community environments to meet the needs of youth in at-risk situations so these students receive the quality education and services necessary to succeed academically and graduate from high school.

The purpose of the NDPN Crystal Star Awards of Excellence in Dropout Recovery, Intervention and Prevention is to identify and bring national recognition to outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the mission of the NDPN.
